Maria Miller - Another new school for Basingstoke
Published: 21 July 2023
Local MP Maria Miller welcomes the announcement that Basingstoke will see another new school built to meet the needs of residents in southwest Basingstoke, the 4th new school to be built and proposed over the past decade.
Proposals for a £14.5m brand-new primary school in Hounsome Fields, Basingstoke have recently been given the go-ahead by Hampshire County Council. Subject to planning the low carbon primary school will open in September 2025 and provide 420 new places for children aged between four and 11 years old, together with provision for pupils with special educational needs.
Maria Miller, MP for Basingstoke said, “This is another new school for Basingstoke, following the building of the Austen Academy, and Castle Hill Primary (Rooksdown Campus), as well as the proposed two form entry primary school opening in September 2026 in Manydown.
“This new school will help ease the pressure on the existing primary schools as new homes are built at Hounsome Fields and Basingstoke Golf Course.
Basingstoke’s Local Plan requires new communities to have the necessary infrastructure in place as quickly as possible, funding for the new academy run Climate Change Primary School Pilot Project has been provided by developer contributions and will be on a 3-hectare site allowing for future expansion.
The new school will feature eco-friendly sustainable features such as ground-source heat pumps, highly insulated air-tight construction, solar control triple glazing and a high performance planted ‘green’ roof.
Maria added, “I want all schools to be ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding’ and this new 14 classroom, two-storey school in Hounsome Fields will provide essential educational places for one of our newest communities in Basingstoke”.
