Chineham Woods Local Nature Reserve

Nature reserves are living green spaces supporting a rich and vibrant variety of wildlife and have wildlife or geology of special local interest. Chineham is fortunate to have such a resource in Chineham Woods Local Nature Reserve.

Comprising Great Sorrell’s Copse, Toll House Copse, Long Copse and Guinea Copse, the reserve supports a huge range of wildlife, just as it has done for the past 400 years. Birds and plants, such as the great spotted woodpecker, herb paris and early purple orchid, thrive in the woodland habitat.

Great Sorrell’s Copse and Long Copse are managed to restore the coppice cycle and regular working parties carry out coppicing and other conservation work.

Binfields Woodland Walk

Parts of this woodland are over 400 years old and it is a wonderful place for walking and wildlife spotting. In spring the woodland floor is covered with bluebells, growing beneath the beech trees.

Throughout the year various bird species can be seen, including woodpeckers, nuthatch and tree creepers.

To find out more about the woodland you can take a self-guided walk using the Binfields Woodland Nature Walk Leaflet. The walk starts and finishes in the Chineham District Shopping Centre car park and follows a 2km route through the footpaths of Lychpit and Chineham.

Tollhouse Meadows

The meadows can be found on the edge of Chineham, bordered by Tollhouse Copse, and Petty’s Brook runs through the site. The Environment Agency landscaped the area with wildlife in mind and heron can sometimes be seen fishing at the water’s edge.

Chineham Nature Walk

This 2.5km self guided circular walk starts at the Scout Hut on Hanmore Road and takes in Guinea Copse, Tollhouse Meadow, Tollhouse Copse and Great Sorrell's Copse. You can take the self guided walk using the Chineham Nature Walk Leaflet.
